The total industrial heat demand in Europe is approximately 3,000 TWh per year. About two-thirds of this is used for process heating. At the same time, European industry generates nearly 900 TWh of waste heat annually—of which a significant portion remains unutilized, representing a major opportunity for energy efficiency improvements and emission reductions.

SteamLevel® heat pump revolutionizes industrial steam production
The SteamLevel® heat pump is the result of over 10 years of Calefa’s development work in heat pump technology. The heat pump technology previously used in the company’s HotLevel® high-temperature heat pumps has now been harnessed for steam production processes as well.
The uniqueness of the solution lies in its ability to use waste heat as the heat source for steam production, and the AmbiSteam® plant can produce process steam for industry at pressures above 5 bar.
“So far, steam has only been produced with combustion-based technologies or electric steam generators, whose efficiency is many times lower than that of a steam heat pump,” says Calefa CEO Petri Vuori.

A new dimension for industrial steam production
The need for a steam heat pump has existed in industry for a long time, with numerous applications in, for example, the forest, food, and chemical industries. In Calefa’s pilot site, the solution has met expectations excellently.
“SteamLevel heat pump technology simultaneously lowers production costs with high efficiency and replaces combustion-based steam production,” Vuori describes.
“We have successfully piloted the steam heat pump at an industrial site over the past year, and the results have been excellent,” adds Calefa’s Antti Porkka.
Calefa accelerates the clean transition
The launch of the SteamLevel® heat pump and the AmbiSteam® total solution is a natural continuation of Calefa’s work in waste heat utilization and clean energy transition.
The company’s previous solutions, including the HotLevel® high-temperature heat pump and the AmbiHeat® heat pump plant, have, over more than 10 years, delivered nearly 1,180,000 MWh of energy savings and over 250,000 tons of CO₂ emission reductions for Calefa’s customers.
