What is Calefa Oy?

Calefa Oy is a Finnish energy technology company founded in 2013. It specializes in delivering modular, turnkey energy solutions for industry, energy utilities, and large properties. Calefa utilizes ambient energy and industrial waste heat to produce zero-emission heating and cooling.

What technologies does Calefa use?

Calefa’s solution for heat production for industry, energy companies, and large properties is the modular AmbiHeat® plant. This patented system can utilize various heat sources, such as outdoor air, geothermal energy, heat from water bodies, solar energy, and industrial waste heat. An AmbiHeat plant may include heat pumps, electric boilers, and thermal energy storage.

AmbiHeat plants utilize Calefa’s patented HotLevel heat pump technology, which is among the world’s leading solutions. HotLevel heat pumps can produce thermal energy from multiple heat sources with a coefficient of performance (COP) of up to 7.

For industrial steam production, Calefa offers the AmbiSteam steam solution, which is based on the unique SteamLevel heat pump technology. The modular AmbiSteam plant can produce steam at pressures of over 5 bars entirely emission-free using industrial waste heat.

What is the AmbiSteam solution?

The AmbiSteam steam solution is a heat pump system that utilizes industrial waste heat to produce steam at pressures exceeding 5 bars.

It is based on Calefa’s proprietary SteamLevel heat pump technology. AmbiSteam is an emission-free, modular, and highly efficient solution for industrial steam production.

How do Calefa’s solutions differ from others?

Calefa delivers complete energy systems on a turnkey basis, taking full responsibility for system design, implementation, and performance (EPC-delivery). This eliminates interface issues and ensures the system operates as agreed.

In addition, Calefa offers CalefaCare, a maintenance and service solution for its modular plants. This includes scheduled maintenance, remote monitoring and optimization, and customizable support services.

Who are Calefa’s solutions designed for?

Calefa’s solutions are particularly suitable for:

  • Industrial companies seeking to utilize waste heat from their processes
  • Energy companies looking for CO₂-free production methods
  • Large properties requiring efficient and environmentally friendly heating and cooling

What are the benefits of Calefa’s systems?

  • Significant energy savings and reduction of CO₂ emissions
  • High return on investment (typically 20–100%)
  • Improved production profitability and competitiveness
  • Responsible and sustainable energy use

What is the difference between AmbiHeat and HotLevel?

AmbiHeat is Calefa’s modular, turnkey heat production solution delivered as a complete system (EPC-delivery). It may include heat pumps, electric boilers, and thermal energy storage.

HotLevel, on the other hand, is Calefa’s proprietary industrial heat pump technology used within AmbiHeat plant solutions.

Is Calefa’s operation certified?

Yes. Calefa holds ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management) certifications, issued by Bureau Veritas. These certifications demonstrate Calefa’s commitment to continuous improvement and responsible management.

Where is Calefa located?

Calefa Oy’s office is located in Hollola, Finland, and the plant modules are manufactured at the company’s own factory in Ikaalinen.

What is Calefa’s history?

Calefa was founded in 2013 by a group of energy-industry professionals who wanted to solve the challenges faced by industry and the energy sector in making complete energy systems work reliably. The company has grown into a leading player in the field thanks to its innovative and award-winning solutions.

How is the EU F-gas regulation addressed in Calefa’s heat pumps?

Under the revised EU F-gas Regulation (EU Regulation 2024/573), from 2030 onwards the GWP value of new heat pumps over 50 kW must be below 150. For industrial heat pumps, a complete ban on F-gases is not expected; instead, the use of synthetic refrigerants with a low GWP value will also be permitted in the future.

This change applies only to new heat pumps placed on the market after 2030. Existing heat pumps may be used for the rest of their service life in accordance with the regulation.

Calefa is committed to developing environmentally friendly and energy-efficient heat pump solutions for the needs of industry and the energy sector. Introducing natural refrigerants is a natural part of this continuum.

The goal of Calefa’s “Industrial heat pump with natural refrigerants” development project is to transition industrial heat pumps to natural refrigerants by replacing the current HFC and HFO refrigerants.

At the moment, the most promising natural refrigerant for the needs of industry and the energy sector appears to be isobutane, which enables sufficiently high temperatures to be produced also for district heating networks.

Does Calefa offer solutions using natural refrigerants?

Yes. Calefa offers solutions that are based on natural refrigerants. Calefa’s heat pump technology uses, for example, isobutane, which enables energy-efficient and environmentally friendly heat recovery in industrial and district heating applications.
